My family has had season tickets since 1956 when my cousin played right tackle for Bud Wilkinson. So I have seen all the good, bad, and ugly through the years. It seems that Riley and Stoops have a common thread in their DNA. They along with their coaches and players seem to be unprepared for at least one game every year that they unexpectantly lose. This year it was Baylor with 2 weeks to prepare. Riley said they had the best practices of the year, so something went South before and during the game. Baylor played well but As long as this keeps happening, a national championship will only be a dream.

Yeah, it’s been a common reoccurrence for many, many years. I too, was excited to be 9-0 after such a long drought. Even with their close wins, I thought Sooner Magic MIGHT get them a shot at the CFP. Now, I’m kinda glad they won’t get that chance. Playing the way they have, a Bama or Georgia would THRASH this team. After the LSU debacle a while back, I don’t want to give the voters a chance to ridicule us yet again until we have a LEGIT contender for the elusive eighth natty.

I was at OU during the early mid-70’s; a time when they knew how to play defense. Nowadays, playing good defense seems to be a haphazard concept. The offense’s job is to score points; the defense’s job is to keep the other team from doing so … Defense wins games. Grinch was supposed to be the solution to OU’s defensive woes but it’s his 3rd year and inconsistency appears to be his stigma as the defensive performance this year has been abysmal - them getting beat was just a matter of time. Until OU learns how to play defense again, they’re not going to be a serious national champ contender.

Absolutely hit the nail on the head. That’s why Stoops teams were saltier. He was a defensive minded coach, and understood EXACTLY what “defense wins championships” is all about. That’s why Georgia is such a dominate monster of a team this season.

OU MUST change the focus to defense if they ever expect to get to the elite level.

Since Baylor handed Grinch his butt last week; it’ll be interesting to see how he & the defensive players respond - Iowa St will decidedly be “up” for this Saturday’s game & I’m sure OK State can hardly wait for the Sooners to show up in Stillwater. The final two games will definitely be a test for Grinch & company and will have an huge impact on OU’s post season opportunities. I just hope they’re ready for it …. As such; I’m pessimistically optimistic about their chances - Grinch just ain’t cutting it thus far.

From what I saw last week, in terms of being physically dominated and not having the CONTROLLABLE parts of the game in check (the mental part of football = 50%), I hope with fading expectations, of them turning it completely around for the next three or four games.

Well …. OU’s defensive effort seemed better against Iowa State - that is until the 4th quarter when they almost let ‘em get away. And, unless it’s a “blowout”, the 4th quarter is usually when tight games are won. So, the question in my mind is why does the 4th quarter seem to be such a hurdle for OU’s defense? Except for Iowa State’s 1st series; OU’ played a pretty solid game up until the 4th quarter & then something changed - and I don’t understand why they can’t finish the job …. Anybody got any ideas?

Well …. OU’s defensive effort seemed better against Iowa State - that is until the 4th quarter when they almost let ‘em get away. And, unless it’s a “blowout”, the 4th quarter is usually when tight games are won. So, the question in my mind is why does the 4th quarter seem to be such a hurdle for OU’s defense? Except for Iowa State’s 1st series; OU’ played a pretty solid game up until the 4th quarter & then something changed - and I don’t understand why they can’t finish the job …. Anybody got any ideas?

I think they tire out. Between that, and NOBODY putting a shadow on 28 and 88 during Iowa States last, desperate drive, we were lucky. On the final interception, Purdy had the guy WIDE open. He just overthrew him at OUR 15 yard line. He makes that catch and the possibility of an OT game becomes much more of a possibility. Whew! Good for us. Bad for them.

We MUST play consistent for the full four quarters if we want to have a chance to upset Okie Lite in Stillwater. Can we do it? Even being realistic, I believe so. If this team truly has the OU DNA like they say they do, then they should and will, rise to the occasion and play their best game of the year on both sides of the ball.

That said…I hope we drill them, and give them something to look forward to the next week in Arlington.

Don’t disagree, but think maybe…just maybe…Grinch is figuring it out with all his studs back in action and on the field. MUCH better scheme and showing against ISU. They’ve still got to not only offensively win the 4th quarter but also defensively control the 4th quarter - which seems to pose a hurdle for Grinch et al - too many nail biting games this year and an honest appraisal would say that OU is lucky to be 10 - 1 at this point …. I think the pollsters see the same thing and that’s why OU is rated near the bottom of the top 10. They really need to have a strong showing in Stillwater this coming Saturday but until they figure out how to play 4 quarters of overwhelming defense; they’re not going to be a nat’l championship contender.

Agree on all grad, but its better “late than never” concerning the OU defense. I just hope to they can carry over the momentum they gained against ISU. It’s going to be a dogfight either way. I can see a 10-7 game without any reservations. I just think, due to history, that we rise to the challenge in Stillwater, and will do it again.

Then, we THAAA-RAAAAASH them in Arlington.

Well; this could prove to be the proverbial 2-edged sword … this is going to be a tough game & OSU is out to prove something this time; particularly with OU’s forthcoming departure to the SEC - this is probably the next to last Bedlam game unless OU schedules them as an out of conference game. So, the pressure is on OSU to make a statement here & if they lose this game, then it’ll be a repeat in Arlington. As such, OU has their work cut out for them and I’m soooo dubious about Grinch & company - the 4th quarter is their Achilles heel. Guess we’ll find out what’s gonna’ happen on Saturday night. I hope OU steps up & gets the job done - Boomer Sooner!!
