Rattler's development

As OU fans, we are spoiled with the QB play delivered by Baker, Kyler and Jalen over the past 5 years. Their collective success set an incredibly high bar for Spencer.

Although they all did it different ways - Baker extending plays and dropping dimes, Kyler's combination of speed and accuracy and Jalen's toughness and running ability - they do have one character trait in common - overcoming adversity. This is a trait, I believe Spencer lacks. Baker, Kyler and Jalen all had significant turmoil in their collegiate careers and learned how to handle adversity.

Spencer, to me, was handed the keys to OU's program and, although Riley benched him during the Texas game - more of a timeout than a replacement - everyone knew he was coming back in, including him. Not a significant amount of adversity there. And in the KU game, we saw another example of Riley making Spencer play through adversity as he was on the field with a hip injury after taking on a tackler at the goal line. Another teaching moment, which doesn't seem to have resulted in learning.

The primary difference I see between the QBs is the ability to perform when things are not going well. Does anyone have confidence when OU is facing a 3rd and 9 now? Even with Jalen, I was confident OU could convert third downs.

Rattler's arm talent is off the charts, but his ability to lead and be led seem to be lacking. I believe, in part, his lack of development is linked to never having to face challenges off the field like his predecessors. Not sure this something you can fix during the season, but, maybe, his lackluster performance will start to sink in and he will learn to deal with adversity a little better.

Agree on all points. However physically gifted a QB may be, his mental acumen and ability to overcome the adversity you speak of, is paramount to his and the teams success.

Never Fear !!
Rattler will come through!!
He doesn’t Quarterback the Rattlers!!
He performs the plays as called by the Sooners!!!
Last season Stogner was the Leading Receiver first half of the Season!!
After Texas, Mims took over!!
We are Early!!
First TD in OT of Texas Game, Spencer runs left, Spencer runs right!!
Then two short passes to Stogner !!
No deep balls at all!!
How soon we forget!

The defenses have adjusted to take away his deep game. I think he is a bit rattled (pun intended) with the change.

It’s about time the Sooners have a game where they put it all together and play exceptionally well on both sides of the ball. Maybe this West Virginia game is that game.

Well, THAT certainly didn’t turn out EXACTLY like I thought.

MAYBE Kansas State?

Playing as Peter positive…seeing what the kid did on the last ditch, game winning, long distance drive, I think all would agree that he and the offense showed some intestinal fortitude on each and every play. What did Rattler go…7 of 8? Had they played like that the whole game, we would be having a different conversation.
Now, that said…whether it be that Bedenbaugh threatened to take every player out of this life or what, something definitely gave OU what it needed to move the ball to win the game.
Now THAT said…you mentioned CONSISTENCY. Well, hell yes, we need to play like that every game. I’m just hopeful them getting a weekly dose of this kind of play creates a damn HABIT!
